Mantis Bible Company Questions about a Bible Translation or other Study Tool

Here's the place to ask questions about a particular Bible translation offered by Mantis Bible. It's not the place to request new translations or to ask when they're coming out. There's another forum for that below!

What Books Should I Start Out With?

I am a novice. I watched some tutorial videos on this site and jotted some notes. I was all set to order a bunch of resources but I wanted to ask some one who knows more than me what books they would recommend to a beginner user. I don't want to get over my head. I am not sure if this is the place to ask, but I thought I would give it a shot. What would you recommend?

This is what I had in the card. What would you add? What would you delete (if any)?

ESV Bible (Need To Have This, Because This Will Be My Main Reading Bible)
King James w/ Strongs
The Message
International Standard Bible Encyclopedia
Treasury Of Scriptural Knowledge

Nelson Study Bible

I'm not sure how to access all the resources which are available in the print version of the NKJV Nelson Study Bible (or perhaps they aren't available?). I can easily access the commentaries keyed to verses; however, in the printed copy, there are lots of other "items of interest" - but I can't find them in the Mantis version e.g. embedded into the text in Luke 4 (in the printed copy) there is a paragraph entitled "Worship" (it begins "A synagogue service began with the recitation of the Shema ...").

Amp Bible

I wish to purchase the Amplified Bible for my iPod Touch using the Mantis Bible Study app. The process starts but then immediately stops. I have successfully purchased the NIV version this way recently and also tried the process with another version but stopped just short of buying it to confirm the problem appears to be just with the Amp Bible.

Can someone help me with this problem? Thanks for your attention.

Don

Geneva translation different in Bible and notes?

Hello, I know that the spelling in the Geneva translation of the Bible is different than modern spelling because it is older while the spelling in the Geneva notes has been updated; but there are times the verse listed in the Geneva notes resource is actually translated different from the verse in the Geneva Bible resource - it is confusing to me because I don't know which is actually the way it should be - an example is Psalm 138:2 -

In the Geneva Bible resource it says
"I will worship toward thine holy Temple and praise thy Name, because of thy louing kindenesse and for thy trueth: FOR THOU HAST MAGNIFIED THY NAME ABOUE ALL THINGS BY THY WORD."

and in you Geneva notes resource it says
"I will worship toward thy holy (b) temple, and praise thy name for thy lovingkindness and for thy truth: FOR THOU HAST MAGNIFIED THY WORD ABOVE ALL THY NAME..."

the last part of this verse isn't just spelling differences, but says something different - which is the correct way the Geneva Bible was translated, and why are they different in the two resources?

word pronunciations

Being sure that I had observed word pronunciations somewhere in the video help tutorials, I have diligently searched for such an aide. Am I correct in my finding that the KJVS with the Hebrew and Greek dictionaries offer pronunciations while the NASS with the Hebrew and Greek dictionaries does not. Or is it that I have not enabled this feature in the settings for the NASS and possibly other versions?

Is there an easier way of seeing the pronunciations other than selecting analyze, KJVS and then the word again? How interesting to see the true pronunciations of words and names. Nice feature.

Theological Wordbook of the Old Testament

Just wanted to say thanks again for all your hard work. I just downloaded and installed the TWOT and TWOS bundle. What a wealth of information available from this tool and especially easy to use since its got links right inside CWS. I am just amazed at what Mantis is able to do, and the cost savings over trying to purchase these tools in printed editions. John

CWS - searching using Strong's number

I've been using CWS and occasionally search for other scripture using the Strong's number, that is provided by clicking on a word. I was puzzled tonight when reading Exo 12:35 and clicking on the word borrowed. While the Strong's number H7592 was provided along with the definition, it was not a link. I was able to click on the Find link to locate other scripture with the word borrow, and in fact the definition provided the same Strong's number. I'm curious as to why some Strong's numbers are clickable links while others are not. Thanks for any help you can provide. John

NASS Improvement

I have been using the NASB for the past 30+ years, wearing out and/or rebinding several copies. I really like having the Mantis NASB/NASS with me all the time, but there are many features missing in the Mantis version that are present in every other versions, both print and online.

For example, none of the Psalms have the preambles which say what the type of psalm it is and who wrote it. Also in the Psalms some information is missing that aids in the study and understanding of those verses. For example, in Psalms 119 every group of 8 verses is referenced to a letter of the Hebrew alphabet. I find that information in every version I've found except Mantis.

Most important, the extensive cross references that I have in all my old print copies, and are used in the Blue Letter Bible and Bible Gateway versions, are missing. I keep having to switch to the NIV version to find a lot of this information. This is doable, but slow on my iPhone 3G, and it breaks the flow of reading.

I recall you saying that you only take what they send you and convert it. Is there a contact at the Lockman Foundation that I can appeal to for an upgrade on what they provide so that all this information is available?

As always, thanks for a great app.
